New WIRA Precision Fibre Microtome
Relevant Test Standards
ISO
137, BS
2043, ASTM D2130 The new WIRA Precision Fibre Microtome has been developed to be easy to use and produce accurate cross-sectional specimens of fibre for further examination under a microscope.
The new instrument is based on the
existing principle of the microtome, to cut a defined thickness of
fibre from a minimum of 10 microns for microscopic identification and
measurement. Method of TestingA degreased bundle of fibre is inserted into the slot on the top of the Microtome. The embedding medium is applied to the bundle and allowed to dry. The fibre bundle is placed on the ejector and the micrometer wheel is used to determine the required thickness of fibre sample and this section is cut off with a razor blade. Cross-sectioning reveals certain characteristics that may be used to identify fibres. The following features should be observed:
Cross-sections can also be useful when examining fibres for dye
penetration.
